Just a little reminder that once the hustle and bustle of the 2016 National Bottle and Collectables Show is over the club will still have plenty of activities for members to get involved in over the next year. Here’s a short tale of a previous day out.
Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club August 2014 Bus Trip.
7.00 AM, sharp! On the 17th the sturdy bus left the Clubrooms and picked up another member on the way to Ballarat market, half full with eager collectors.
We were all disappointed at how small the once thriving market was. Though most managed to find something to buy! Nothing to do with how bitterly cold a morning it was of course!
Then off to Ballarat Mill Markets, again a thorough search produced “keepers” for most members. Followed by Main Rd Collectables and a friendly welcome by the owner Cheryl who “loves bottle collectors because you are all walking encyclopedias”.
A BBQ lunch with Hany’s, now famous, home made hamburgers, a quiet drink and on the bus again to the Newlyn shops and Daylesford Mill Markets.
All this was totally free for club members, everyone who went will tell you what a great time they had. Make sure that you book your seat for the next bus trip!
A feature of the exhibition side of the 2016 National Bottle and Collectables show will be a massive display of memorabilia, bottles and more from the Geelong company Chas Cole and Co. This display will include many notable and rare items kindly on loan for the occasion from several local collectors. The Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club are delighted that so many have been willing to help to make this unique display of local collectables possible.
Geelong’s Industrial and Mercantile History
Chas Cole and Co were a major player in the development of industrial Geelong. Charles Cole’s father, Edward was a Wine and Spirit merchant in Geelong from at least 1848 and continued through to the 1880s. Charles (born 1859) started in the family firm but had commenced his own business in the same line by 1884. He was certainly making cordials from near the start and added aerated waters to his business around 1890. The production of aerated waters in particular has left a legacy of wonderful bottles for collectors today. The trade mark of a Heron catching a Fish inspires the Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club logo of a bird catching a bottle. The aerated water business was separated and recapitalised in 1919 under the name Geelong Aerated Waters.
Charles Cole Moorabool St Geelong Claret label circa 1890
The wine and spirit business continued for many years. Through their time Cole and Co ordered bottles from glassworks and potteries in Australia and the United Kingdom, labels from printers in Melbourne and Ballarat and advertising items from whoever would supply them.
As a combined group the changes in style and form provide an excellent snapshot of the changes occurring in design more generally from the late 19th century through to the 1930s. This will be a fascinating display for anyone interested in Geelong, Industrial or Advertising history.
In the week leading up to the National we have booked the sign on Melbourne Road at Corio. The sign will be lit with a 45th National Bottle and Collectables Show message plus a few details.

If you are around Geelong be sure to mention it or point it out to friends, colleagues or strangers in the street! The best promotion of all is a word of mouth recommendation.
On that front there is going to be a lot to recommend! The entries are flying in from all over the country and overseas. The hall will be packed with swap and sell so if you collect anything at all you won’t want to miss this one.

The Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club are very pleased to announce that we have commissioned a unique Trophy for Bottle of the Year at 2016 National. This trophy will be a creation of renowned Point Lonsdale glass artist David Hobday.
Bottle collectors know full well the appeal of glass and this locally made trophy will be a stunning prize for the lucky winner.
Eligibility:
To win this amazing piece of art you will need to enter Category 54: Find of the year – Single bottle or container. The item must have been found (not acquired) after the Perth National Show and before the current Geelong National Show.
We know there have been some great finds in that time and we would love to see them on display. This trophy is certainly a good reason to drag out your personal highlight from the past year!
And don’t forget this adds to the already impressive list of prizes available for those displaying in a number of categories.

28 days to go!! Not that I am counting or anything, much! Yes the Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club will be concentrating on the 45th Australian National Bottle and Collectables Show and it needs to be an “All hands on deck” approach.
We will be calling on all members, friends and past members to help during the intensive three days of the show, the day before and after and any other ways in the lead up, especially with Marketing the event.
Look out for a detailed roster where you can volunteer an hour, a day, or more. To put on an orange vest to be part of the Security team or help man the door. Set up, pack up or whatever.
Bunnings BBQs and the Budget.
Our six BBQs have added approximately $4,500 to our account. This will enable Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club to run a better National show and stop us stressing on how to make the budget balance. We have been so good at the job we have 2 more dates, November 4th and December 14th, to top up those accounts after the show.
Our committee will look at our ongoing financial security in 2017. Thank you to Allan and Paul and all helpers for all this.
The Club has paid for some artwork and now you can order your Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club Windcheater, Polo Top or Cap at Monday’s meeting or to Paul Bruce pbruce2@bigpond.com. 0427 338 098.
We need to order these now to get them before the show.
Show Duty Rosters.
Paul has drawn up some rosters for you to volunteer in a time slot for door duty, security, set up, pack up, even help on the Thursday before and Monday after. Put your name down at Monday’s meeting or contact Paul pbruce2@bigpond.com 0427 338 098
Marketing our National Show.
Roadside signs and posters in Collectables shops are going up. We need you to put more posters up in any local shops, share our Facebook page, tell all your friends. Do anything to get the word out there.
Pre and post show tours.
Show participants love seeing some collections before the National. Especially interstate visitors. If you are interested in inviting any collectors around to see your collection before or after the National talk with David. Visits can be arranged, by invite only.
October and November meetings.
October 24 will be a normal general meeting plus Champagne afterwards !
November 28 will be our annual BBQ at David and Hany’s.
2017.
Bus trip, BBQ outing, guest speaker/s. Any suggestions ?
EVALUATION Bunnings Geelong Club Fundraising BBQ Friday 9th September 2016
According to the weather forecast we were going to need snorkels at the BBQ however rather than getting rained out Friday was a record for us at the Bunnings BBQ.
Sausages in Bread Geelong Club Fundraising BBQ Friday 9th September 2016
The financials were as follows:
TOTAL SALES $1176.40
EXPENSES $257
PROFIT $919.40
Details:
This profit was obtained with sales of approx. 32 kg of sausages, 23 Loaves of bread and 10kg of onions and was on top of the approx. $600 + profit from the previous Tuesday.
Trade throughout the day was very steady with very little respite from about 11.30 am to 2pm.
Thanks are due again to Alan, Cam, Noel, Mara, David, Grahame B, Graham T and Paul along with David and Hany on the Tuesday.
Looking forward to Alans next financial report as we should now be well setup financially to run the National show.
Future:
Alan and I spoke to Liz at Bunnings afterwards and she was aware we did want a break in October and I am sure our crew need a well-earned break leading up to the National.
Liz has given us a Friday (4th November which is the Friday of the Melbourne Cup Week) and when we were there talking to her there was a Saturday cancellation – it was 31st December New Years Eve!! She offered us the date. This could be huge if we can handle it so we quickly but tentatively said YES!!!!! It has the potential to set us up well for 2017. A $2000-$2500 start to the year would be very nice indeed!!!!
It is very clear we are now well set up for these BBQs with the new eskys working a treat and we are much slicker with money handling and greeting and serving customers. Having Graham Tomkins handling the till really streamlined things on Friday. It’s been a steep learning curve for everyone but well done all!!!!
Whilst under pressure on Friday we would have benefitted from having the full surface of the hotplate in operation. This is something that will be essential on a Saturday where we could expect to sell 60+ kg of sausages. Double what we have been doing!!! Speaking to other operators we will not need any more people rostered than normal just 4 to 5 at a time as in their opinion extra numbers just clog things up.
The BBQ’s have also been great for getting fellowship going in the club as we get to see and appreciate members in a different light.
We need to discuss the December 31 date at the Tuesday committee meeting.
