September 2018 Meeting of the Club this Monday 24th.

    7.30 pm
    Upstairs, Barwon River Pavilion.
    under the James Harrison Bridge,
near corner Barrabool Road & High Street, Belmont.

    From the President:

Hello Geelong Bottle & Collectables Club Members and Committee,

Firstly a big thanks to Eric for his presentation on the history of drinking water in Geelong at the last meeting. Thank you Eric!

As usual bring along your great finds to discuss at the next meeting on Monday 24th.

BUT the Meeting will mainly concentrate on the lead up to our show and our call for volunteers on how you can all help!

The usual setup and pack up helpers, door staff and display security plus numerous little jobs.

Any promotion club members can manage (just telling friends would be great!) but here is  just a sample of what’s happening in the background!

    MARKETING
I have put up 11 signs, Allan 5, Eric 4 and have five more printed with new panels applied ready to go up this weekend in some prominent sites.
A4 flyers are starting to go up around Geelong shops.
2,500 four to a page leaflets have been in shops with 500 in stock for last two weeks
Facebook and Bottle forum promotions are being pushed along but if you use any social media please Like, Share and Post about the show!

    ENTRIES & LAYOUT

Layout is easy as plenty of room and 1 meter square carpet squares and graph paper with 1cm to 1 meter grids making it a dream!

Graham Blake will do a final copy once my draft is finalised.

Paul’s drop box data at time of writing shows at moment we are only using half of our 120 tables!

SO GEELONG MEMBERS PLEASE GET YOUR ENTRIES IN MONDAY!

Entry form and information sheet can be found here – http://www.geelongbottleandcollectables.club/wp-content/uploads/2018/06/2018GeelongShowSchedule.pdf

Things are progressing well but still plenty for the committee to discuss in the next two weeks.

    Cheers David

    Bunnings Fundraising BBQs

Thanks to Allan Snowden and Paul Bruce for organising this important fund raiser, and everyone who helped on the day. GBACC needs more money in the bank to make sure we can run a fantastic National Bottle & Collectables show and come out of it financially OK. Our first BBQ profit and future larger profits, plus the market day, will help achieve this. See report next page and attached.
And see the roster for next dates you can help, August 2nd and 12th, September 9th. pbruce2@gmail.com

    Social media and new website

The Facebook page and website, thanks to David Bruce and ABCR auctions, means we are promoting the hobby to people who do not know we exist! Have a look at them for latest news and copies of past reports, auction results on Geelong items, etc

Next Geelong Bottle & Collectables club meeting

    Next events:

Maryborough Show August 26th to 28th.
National Bottle and Collectables Show Geelong Showgrounds October 21st to 23rd.
Morwell show November 25th to 27th.

Geelong Bottle & Collectables Club Fundraising Bunnings BBQ 17/7/16

    120716BBQ
    Financials
    Total Income
    $901.60
    Receipted Expenditure
    $480.30
    Cash profit
    $421.30
    Stock On Hand Drinks etc
    $120.00 estimate

This was a very satisfactory first effort which required a one off purchase of essential operating gear such as aprons, detergent, sausage holders, rubbish bins etc. as well as expendables such as sausages, bread, onions, and drinks
Next time a turnover of $901 would give us a profit close to $700 Which makes the whole exercise very worthwhile even during the week

    LEARNINGS

Alan and I believe that we could start our roster at 7.30 with two people —- many tradies were looking for sausages at the start of the day. For most of the day 4 people would have been adequate to run the show except for the lunch period from say 11.30 to 1.30 where 5 were needed

    LOGISTICS

Alan believes that the resting trays should be on the right hand side of the BBQ—the BBQ slopes to the left as well— and then there would be no need for double handling the sausages The person doing the cooking could then concentrate on that

    FUTURE

The acquittal at the end in the office upstairs is a bit time consuming however Bunnings were very happy with our group and preparation (big thanks to Alan). Liz Keck the coordinator has offered us a Tuesday in a couple of weeks. I need to phone them this Monday if we want it. Also I need to submit another expression of interest on the 1st August and she will give us some more Fridays and try to squeeze in a Saturday or Sunday for us.
Thanks are due to everyone on our roster. Bunnings were very impressed by our preparation, readiness and service to their customers and also the clean up where the BBQ area was left in a state better than how we found it. This all is evaluated in the final acquittal form.
Thanks again to everyone for their support. Great result!!!!
    Paul and Alan

Geelong Collectors Club Meeting for June 2016 Mathews Harp of Erin Torpedo Bottle Geelong
Mathews Harp of Erin Torpedo Bottle Geelong

    Hello Fellow Club Members,

Note that our Geelong Collectors Club Meeting for June 2016 is on Monday June 27th and the venue is as per usual at the Barwon River Pavilion under the James Harrison Bridge. There are some important topics to discuss regarding fund raising to help us finance the cost of staging this years National Show.
Our secretary Paul Bruce has managed to secure 3 dates from “Bunnings” on which we can run BBQ’s to help raise money and these three dates are all on Fridays, namely 15th July, 12th August and 9th Sept. Friday may be a difficult time for some of you to help out but on Monday night we will be asking for volunteers and some of us will have to brush up on the Food Safety Health Regulations.

Our President David Smith as well as Cam Ward are both unable to attend our meeting and have tendered their apologies

Meeting time as per usual is 7:30pm for set up ready for a 8pm start. Don’t forget to bring along your latest finds or something interesting from your collection for discussion.

Looking forward to seeing you at the Meeting,

    Regards,
    Noel Dawson.
    Vice President.

  • Presidents Report March/April 2016

GBACC Presidents Report March April 2016

    Geelong Bottle Collectables Club Logo

Hello everyone, the autumn winds are blowing the last of the leaves off the trees as I write. Currently rushing around with the last preparations for my trip, the club swap and sell day on May 28th and some more for the National. I always try to remember that we are involved in a great hobby and being busy is supposed to be a good thing!

May 28th Market and swap & sell day is building up. Inside nearly sold out though bookings are extremely slow to come in. I had hoped for around $1000 gross or more but I think the inclement weather forecast will kill off the outside stalls. Hopefully the weather improves and I am wrong. Results will be in for the next members update.

    The National, October 21,22,23.

A few of us met at the showgrounds and we discussed using the Agricultural Hall, Motor Pavilion and Education pavilion with a marquee joining the 3 together so it’s looking BIG. This is planned so we can expand the space required as bookings demand. certainly the level of interest out there is great and we have to make sure we can cater for demand.

All this plus an inspection of AJ’s on site cafe (The former Great Western Hotel beer barn) which will host the Friday BBQ (we cook, they serve drinks at bar prices) and Saturday night Roast meal and 150 lot Auction make everything on site a potentially great activity filled event.

Don’t forget if you are thinking of selling anything please consider selling through the Roycroft Auction via GBACC as we get to keep the sellers commission on 50 lots if we source them.

    eBay news

an interesting lot the last two months.

Fred Flanagan brand shorts $205; Eastern beach Paddlo Boat post card, no sale at $25; Polly Farmer card $4; Purple GAW sauce, $35 good money for a common bottle; Berri fruit Juice pint $11; small Franklins ceramic label $11; and another $9; 10 boxes of small Franklins ceramic labels, no sale, private sale later; Mclintocks Vinegar label, original label on champagne bottle, no sale $54; Extremely rare Chas Cole torpedo in purple glass, damaged, coming home at $170; International harvester stick pin $35; Dickson Chemist bottles, coming home, $83 and $38; McPhillimy Lolly jar no sale after repeated attempts at $175; Ampol “We follow Geelong” badge, no sale at $20.

    Kerleys Auctions

This local auction house has seen a good selection of quality Geelong bottles go through over last 2 months, apparently from a country household lot, some have been cheap others sold for good prices. I haven’t recorded all sale prices but one week saw: A perfect Priddle ginger beer sold at $300 (plus commission 16%); A Wilding Queenscliff Codd $500; Chas Cole Torp (vertical bird) $170; Chas Cole Ginger beer (English pottery) $80. All this seems to be bringing other vendors in to sell their bottles as well, again with mixed results.

Please put an article in to Cam Ward for the newsletter. Consider doing a brief profile of yourself and your collection or favourite item, Why and how you started collecting etc. We need more stories !

Yours in collecting, Dave Smith, President GBACC

Geelong Collectables Club Market Day Inside Stalls
More inside stalls Geelong Bottle and Collectables Club Market Day. May 2016.

    Swap and Sell Day

May 28th is building up and expect a last minute booking rush! Hall is two thirds full with most outside sellers waiting for a weather forecast, hope we get a good day! Regardless of weather inside the hall and the sheds will be full of great gear and if you need that clear out why not book a stall or table!!
Most of the committee is helping set up Friday from 1pm. Meeting at Rugby St hall to load tables, then to Dean St to set them up. We need some help on the day, bumping in stall holders, BBQ and packing up and taking down signs. Many hands make light work.
And welcome to a BBQ afterwards.

    Club Fees!

A few of you have paid fees by EFT and some of you need reminding …….PAY YOUR FEES.

Once it does you can circulate to everyone. We are getting lots of enquiries and people waiting for it to come out so everyone is keen. we will be asking for help for set up, pack up and rosters during the show so please make yourself available.
The whole concept of everything on site is coming together well. Looks like as well as the Agricultural hall we will be using the motor pavilion, the education pavilion and a marquee to join them all together. AJs on site cafe is also a fantastic new venue for Friday and Saturday evening meals.
    Cheers in collecting.

    GBACC Meeting April 25th 2016

Yes, our third public holiday meeting of 2016!

Anyway, we will be there (Upstairs, Barwon River Pavilion. under the James Harrison Bridge, near corner Barrabool Road & High Street, Belmont). 7.30 pm onwards for an 8pm meeting start.

Bring along your latest finds and any display item or items you want to talk about and educate us (those of us who may not know much about what you collect).

    Fees and Enewsletter

Those who have paid promptly, thank-you. Everyone else, save me reminding you please. Also let us know if you are happy to receive your bi-monthly newsletter by email.

    Latest Finds

Just a clarification on latest finds and displays. We want you to bring both along!

A “latest find” is something you have found, purchased, swapped or acquired in the past 90 days or so.

Why 90 days? In case you miss a meeting or two, have too much to bring along that month (what a great problem that would be!) or strike the November BBQ, December, January gap.

These are the ones that can earn votes for “Finder of the year” and “Find of the Year” awards and should be marked with a red “latest find” label provided.

    Displays

Something you have had in your collection but want to bring along to talk to the rest of us inquisitive and willing members about. A latest find will often prompt a display by adding to a set or series you have been building up.

May 28 Swap & Sell and Market day 7 Dean St 8am to 3pm

This is for collectables, bottles and general market stuff.

If you have places to hand out or display flyers get in touch and we can email you some to print.

General market details are here – http://www.geelongbottleandcollectables.club/?page_id=41

We need some more stall holders and helpers on the day. And please spread the word via posters in your local shop and social media. All members are welcome to an ozbottleforum and friends BBQ at Hany and David’s house after we pack up.

    Social media and new website

Yes, GBACC has a Facebook page and a new website! Thanks to David Bruce, GBACC member and partner in ABCR auctions.

ABCR auctions has very generously sponsored our website, plus hours of David’s time in setting it all up and admin. Thanks mate!

  • Presidents Report March/April 2015

Another one from the way back machine! This time 12 months ago and the start of the planning for the National Show in 2016.

    GBACC Presidents Report March/April 2015

Are you excited by the thought that Geelong will host it’s first ever Australian National Bottle and Collectables show? I am!
Put October 21, 22, 23, 2016 firmly in the diary, calendar or electronic device. Make sure you can block out some time and be there to enjoy, help and participate.

Thank you for the resounding support for running the National.

2016 Australian National Bottle and Collectables Show Geelong Poster
2016 Australian National Bottle and Collectables Show Geelong Poster

I am getting some major details locked in and will “go public” with the announcement very soon to ABCR magazine and The Australian Bottle Forum so we can start promoting from the Perth National in July.
We may get a National sub committee going with both members and non members. We need the extra whether they attend meetings or not.

Our AGM was a great night with 15 or so members there, great supper, latest finds and friendship in the hobby.

Huge thanks again to Bob for his 20 years as treasurer. Say that slowly…. 20…. years.

Allan has stepped up to be Treasurer. Thanks Allan, though he has done this on a “I will if no one else will” basis. We really need to get our heads around succession planning and getting some younger members involved in running the club. Not saying you are too old Allan!

The rest of the Committee is pretty much the same but small. Noel as V.President. Cam, Newsletter Editor AND Secretary, with still room for extra Committee member/s and a regular supper person needed plus it would be great to get a website administrator.

Bus trip being planned but getting a date is tricky. Fund raising is something we will be calling for help and participation on.

    eBay news.

An interesting lot the last two months.
Scarce Hoopers Vinegar works Jar $26; Geelong bottle opener $4; Volum Brewery crown seal opener $20; Hearnes labelled Cures No 7, $5, No3 $17; Chas Cole GB chipped, $37; nicer one $153; Union half pint milk cheap at $10; Corio 5 star Whisky tie bar $25. Amazing what Corio Whisky stuff is out there. Several Eastern beach Post Cards not selling at $6; Bollington airship 13oz Codd $100; Chas Cole 13oz Codd $94. Both polished but cheapish? J.T. Meehan c/s $10; Mathews Harp Lamont can’t sell at $30!
R Parker token no sale $45; Grammar School Highton sign $500; 1917 Gala day badge $15; Troops in Moorabool St post card $31; Peace 1919 badge no sale $15.

There are some reasonable Geelong bottles in next group of auctions from ABCR, Nick Rowland and R and J Roycroft. It will be interesting to see what they make.

Please put an article in to Cam Ward for the newsletter. Consider doing a brief profile of you and your collection, favourite item, Why and how you started collecting etc. etc.
