  • Congratulations to Geelong Club on 2014 Show

Congratulations to the Geelong Club (2014 Show)

As we look forward to the 2016 National Bottle and Collectables Show in October it’s nice to reflect on some of the events managed by our club in the past. Here’s a lovely letter of Congratulations to the Geelong Club on our 2014 show.

Hi David, and committee of the Geelong Collectors Club

Depression Glass 2014 Geelong Bottle and Collectables Show
Depression Glass 2014 Geelong Bottle and Collectables Show

Congratulations on running a very successful show on Saturday, and thank you very much for including cycles in the mix, we had a terrific day.

You have the place right. The Showgrounds offers easy access with plenty of space. The pavilion was spacious, airy, with the right distance between exhibits, a perfect venue I thought.

The program was just right, the auction on Friday night drew together those who attended and the early start reinforced this connectedness. Alan and Noel and others (the nice chap on the entry on Friday whose name I don’t know) who gave security acted as ties into the activity of the day, we felt we were part of something bigger than just ourselves.

The delineation of sellers and exhibits on show was a perfect mix. There was something to see and something to buy. The exhibits on show were variable and idiosyncratic, wonderful. The little boy who put his exhibit on show was a true winner. Here is the future, the way we all started but for most of us no such chance to display in public was available. One lady who collected frogs was an example of the implication of such a chance. Without fear of criticism she gains confidence, and not just just in collection but in everything she does.

We, the cycling buffs, learned heaps and should we be invited to display again, will have a much more thoughtful exhibit. One huge win for me was that the author of a cycling history from Mildura was present. He had published in 1988 and his work was an incentive for me and the Whirr of Many Wheels. Meeting and talking to him was perhaps one of the most important times I have had in the project. That meeting was very significant, so the show strengthens my arm in future work.
Thank you also for supporting the Whirr of Many Wheels project. Those who buy keep the wheels turning and I appreciate your purchase and hope those who read, enjoy.

Well done, you would have to be one of the most efficient and capable committees in the district.

    Sincerely
    Rod

  • Club meeting April 25th 2016

    GBACC Meeting April 25th 2016

Yes, our third public holiday meeting of 2016!

Anyway, we will be there (Upstairs, Barwon River Pavilion. under the James Harrison Bridge, near corner Barrabool Road & High Street, Belmont). 7.30 pm onwards for an 8pm meeting start.

Bring along your latest finds and any display item or items you want to talk about and educate us (those of us who may not know much about what you collect).

    Fees and Enewsletter

Those who have paid promptly, thank-you. Everyone else, save me reminding you please. Also let us know if you are happy to receive your bi-monthly newsletter by email.

    Latest Finds

Just a clarification on latest finds and displays. We want you to bring both along!

A “latest find” is something you have found, purchased, swapped or acquired in the past 90 days or so.

Why 90 days? In case you miss a meeting or two, have too much to bring along that month (what a great problem that would be!) or strike the November BBQ, December, January gap.

These are the ones that can earn votes for “Finder of the year” and “Find of the Year” awards and should be marked with a red “latest find” label provided.

    Displays

Something you have had in your collection but want to bring along to talk to the rest of us inquisitive and willing members about. A latest find will often prompt a display by adding to a set or series you have been building up.

May 28 Swap & Sell and Market day 7 Dean St 8am to 3pm

This is for collectables, bottles and general market stuff.

If you have places to hand out or display flyers get in touch and we can email you some to print.

General market details are here – http://www.geelongbottleandcollectables.club/?page_id=41

We need some more stall holders and helpers on the day. And please spread the word via posters in your local shop and social media. All members are welcome to an ozbottleforum and friends BBQ at Hany and David’s house after we pack up.

    Social media and new website

  • Presidents Report March/April 2015

Another one from the way back machine! This time 12 months ago and the start of the planning for the National Show in 2016.

    GBACC Presidents Report March/April 2015

Are you excited by the thought that Geelong will host it’s first ever Australian National Bottle and Collectables show? I am!
Put October 21, 22, 23, 2016 firmly in the diary, calendar or electronic device. Make sure you can block out some time and be there to enjoy, help and participate.

Thank you for the resounding support for running the National.

2016 Australian National Bottle and Collectables Show Geelong Poster

I am getting some major details locked in and will “go public” with the announcement very soon to ABCR magazine and The Australian Bottle Forum so we can start promoting from the Perth National in July.
We may get a National sub committee going with both members and non members. We need the extra whether they attend meetings or not.

Our AGM was a great night with 15 or so members there, great supper, latest finds and friendship in the hobby.

Huge thanks again to Bob for his 20 years as treasurer. Say that slowly…. 20…. years.

Allan has stepped up to be Treasurer. Thanks Allan, though he has done this on a “I will if no one else will” basis. We really need to get our heads around succession planning and getting some younger members involved in running the club. Not saying you are too old Allan!

The rest of the Committee is pretty much the same but small. Noel as V.President. Cam, Newsletter Editor AND Secretary, with still room for extra Committee member/s and a regular supper person needed plus it would be great to get a website administrator.

Bus trip being planned but getting a date is tricky. Fund raising is something we will be calling for help and participation on.

    eBay news.

An interesting lot the last two months.
Scarce Hoopers Vinegar works Jar $26; Geelong bottle opener $4; Volum Brewery crown seal opener $20; Hearnes labelled Cures No 7, $5, No3 $17; Chas Cole GB chipped, $37; nicer one $153; Union half pint milk cheap at $10; Corio 5 star Whisky tie bar $25. Amazing what Corio Whisky stuff is out there. Several Eastern beach Post Cards not selling at $6; Bollington airship 13oz Codd $100; Chas Cole 13oz Codd $94. Both polished but cheapish? J.T. Meehan c/s $10; Mathews Harp Lamont can’t sell at $30!
R Parker token no sale $45; Grammar School Highton sign $500; 1917 Gala day badge $15; Troops in Moorabool St post card $31; Peace 1919 badge no sale $15.

There are some reasonable Geelong bottles in next group of auctions from ABCR, Nick Rowland and R and J Roycroft. It will be interesting to see what they make.

Please put an article in to Cam Ward for the newsletter. Consider doing a brief profile of you and your collection, favourite item, Why and how you started collecting etc. etc.

    Yours in collecting
    Dave Smith
    President GBACC

  • Bottles for Tender National Show Fundraiser.

Bottles for Tender Mathews Howey Torpedo
    National Fundraiser. Bottles for Tender.

Bottles for Tender National Show Fundraiser.

On Monday night the big reveal of the tenders received for the five donated bottles took place.
These bottles were generously donated by club member Stan Bee as a way to raise funds for the National Show in October (21st to 23rd – get in touch for more details!!). In the final analysis 3 of the 5 bottles were sold:
Bottle 1: P. Mathews Lamont, a $40 tender was accepted.
Bottle 2: Christmas Tree Salad Oil, no offer accepted.
Bottle 3: Charles Cole Torpedo, $75 tender accepted (note this bottle ended up with a little bruise after being handled at one of the shows!)
Bottle 4: Bayldon & Graham Torpedo, no offer accepted.
Bottle 5: Mathews & Howey early square collar Torpedo, $290 offer accepted.

So a great result for the club with $405 raised. The two unsold bottles will be used for future raffles. Watch this space!

  • GBACC Annual General Meeting 2016 March 28th

GBACC Annual General Meeting 2016  & General Meeting March 28th

    From the President:

It is all happening folks and I am feeling more and more confident that we can deliver the 45th National Bottle and Collectables Show, Geelong in October, 21,22, 23, 2016.

The committee is working hard to get the groundwork in place and it will be an all hands on deck approach. Building up our funds to achieve this and ensure the future of GBACC in the years after the event is our initial priority.

Stan Bee’s generous donations of 5 bottles for tender, is a great start. Thanks is not enough. Tenders close 8pm on the night.

Sourcing items, though GBACC for the Roycroft auction is another one. We keep the sellers commission on 50 items.

We are still looking for Sponsors for the National. Any ideas welcome.

We still require Stall holders for the May Swap & Sell Day and the National as well.

    Memberships.

Make sure we are all financial members for the big year ahead. we can now pay by EFT as an option for those who can’t attend meetings. Cheque or cash on a meeting night to David or Allan is still OK. Also there is an opt in if you want to receive newsletters electronically to save costs. Our fees have been revenue neutral at best and Australia Post and printing have pushed this to a negative, hence the very reluctant increase in fees to base $30.

    GBACC Annual General Meeting 2016

We must first hold our AGM and I have indicated that I would continue this year as President to see the national through and consider the future after that. Noel Dawson is in the same position as Vice President. Allan Snowden is continuing as Treasurer, Cam Ward as newsletter editor. We really need a new secretary!

    Website

David Bruce will help us create a new website. Apparently the Google site isn’t suitable for what we want. He, and Tony Keunan will boost up the site and along with our brand new Facebook page, launch us into the web and reach out to those collectors, young and not so young, who aren’t in clubs, and communicate with them. Who knows, some may become members! We must seriously start looking at recruiting members to ensure the future of GBACC.

Looking forward to a great AGM, bring along your latest finds and purchases, a mini display and share your passion for this great hobby with us.

    Cheers in Collecting.

    President GBACC 0419434306
